A Certified Pre-Owned Honda can give you more warranty protection than a traditional used vehicle, but understanding exactly how that coverage works takes more than reading "7-year/100,000-mile limited warranty" in an advertisement.
Does that seven-year period begin when you purchase the vehicle? What happens to the original factory warranty? Does the coverage transfer if you sell the vehicle later? And how should you compare the cost of a Certified Pre-Owned Honda with a new Honda that may qualify for a different financing rate?
These are important questions, especially when you are deciding whether a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle offers the right balance of price, protection and long-term value.
Quick Take: Does the Honda CPO Warranty Transfer?
Yes. The remaining Honda Certified Pre-Owned limited warranty can transfer when the vehicle is sold from one private owner to another private owner.
The new owner receives the remaining balance of the applicable powertrain and non-powertrain coverage. The transfer is not a brand-new warranty period, however. The original time and mileage limits continue running, so the next owner receives whatever coverage remains.
Honda instructs owners to contact Honda Care Contract Services and notify Honda of the ownership change to transfer the remaining coverage properly. Honda's transfer language specifically addresses the limited warranty. Other benefits, such as complimentary maintenance or exchange policies, may have separate eligibility requirements.
What Does "Honda Certified Pre-Owned" Actually Mean?
A HondaTrue Certified vehicle is not simply a used Honda with an added warranty. It must meet Honda's age and mileage requirements and complete Honda's certification process.
HondaTrue Certified gasoline and hybrid vehicles receive a 182-point inspection. Shoppers can also review a downloadable vehicle inspection report and CARFAX vehicle history report for the specific vehicle they are considering. Eligible HondaTrue Certified vehicles are generally up to six years old and have fewer than 80,000 miles at the time of sale.
Certification adds a Honda-backed limited warranty and several ownership benefits, but not every Honda CPO vehicle receives the same coverage.
HondaTrue Certified
HondaTrue Certified is the main program for qualifying newer gasoline and hybrid Honda vehicles. It includes:
- Seven-year/100,000-total-mile limited powertrain coverage
- Two additional years of limited non-powertrain coverage or coverage up to 100,000 total odometer miles
- Honda Care roadside assistance
- Two complimentary oil changes within the applicable eligibility period
- A 182-point inspection and downloadable inspection report
HondaTrue Used
HondaTrue Used applies to qualifying older Honda vehicles and provides a different level of coverage:
- Six months or 10,000 miles of limited powertrain coverage
- Six months or 10,000 miles of limited non-powertrain coverage
- Honda Care roadside assistance
- One complimentary oil change within the applicable eligibility period
HondaTrue Certified EV
HondaTrue Certified EV vehicles have a separate inspection process, warranty structure and complimentary service package. Buyers considering a Certified Pre-Owned electric Honda should review the EV-specific coverage rather than relying on the gasoline and hybrid terms explained below.
What Warranty Coverage Carries Over When You Buy a CPO Honda?
A HondaTrue Certified vehicle may have more than one type of warranty protection associated with it. The important detail is that these coverages do not all begin on your purchase date.
1. Any Remaining New Vehicle Limited Warranty
A new Honda is generally covered by a three-year/36,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty. Both limits are measured from the vehicle's original in-service date and end when either the time or mileage limit is reached.
When you purchase a newer Certified Pre-Owned Honda that is still inside its original warranty period, the remaining factory coverage stays with the vehicle. You do not receive a new three-year factory warranty. You receive the unused portion of the original coverage.
For example, a two-year-old Honda with 24,000 miles may still have part of its original three-year/36,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty remaining. That coverage could end because the vehicle reaches 36,000 miles or because three years have passed since the original in-service date, whichever happens first.
2. HondaTrue Certified Non-Powertrain Coverage
HondaTrue Certified provides two additional years of limited non-powertrain coverage or coverage until the vehicle reaches 100,000 total odometer miles, whichever occurs first.
The start date depends on whether the original New Vehicle Limited Warranty is still active when you purchase the vehicle.
When the original warranty is still active: The HondaTrue Certified non-powertrain coverage begins after the original three-year/36,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty expires.
When the original warranty has already expired: The HondaTrue Certified non-powertrain coverage begins on the date of the CPO purchase.
This is a significant improvement over the commonly repeated description of a one-year/12,000-mile CPO warranty. Honda's April 2026 warranty information provides two additional years of non-powertrain coverage, subject to the 100,000-total-mile limit.
3. HondaTrue Certified Powertrain Coverage
The HondaTrue Certified limited powertrain warranty lasts for seven years or 100,000 total odometer miles, whichever comes first.
The most important word is total.
This does not mean you receive seven additional years or 100,000 additional miles after purchasing the vehicle. The clock begins on the vehicle's original in-service date, and the mileage limit refers to the number shown on the odometer.
A four-year-old CPO Honda does not come with seven more years of powertrain coverage. It may have approximately three years remaining, assuming it does not reach 100,000 miles first.
Why the Original In-Service Date Matters
The original in-service date is the date the vehicle was first placed into service. It is one of the most important numbers to request when shopping for a Certified Pre-Owned Honda because it determines how far the vehicle has progressed through its factory and CPO warranty timelines.
Here is a hypothetical example.
Example: A 2023 Honda Accord Purchased as CPO in 2026
Assume a Honda Accord was originally placed in service on July 15, 2023. It is then purchased as a HondaTrue Certified vehicle on August 1, 2026, with 35,000 miles.
Its original three-year/36,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty would have ended on July 15, 2026, because the three-year time limit was reached first.
Because the original warranty had already expired when the vehicle was purchased as CPO, the HondaTrue Certified non-powertrain coverage would begin on August 1, 2026. It would continue for two years or until the vehicle reached 100,000 total miles, whichever happened first.
The limited powertrain coverage would continue until July 15, 2030, seven years after the original in-service date, or until the odometer reached 100,000 miles, whichever happened first.
In this example, the CPO buyer would have:
- Approximately two years of limited non-powertrain coverage
- Approximately four years of remaining limited powertrain coverage
- Less coverage if the vehicle reached 100,000 miles before either time period ended
That is why the vehicle's model year alone does not tell you exactly how much warranty remains.
What Does the HondaTrue Certified Warranty Cover?
Honda separates its CPO warranty into powertrain and non-powertrain coverage.
Powertrain Coverage
The limited powertrain warranty covers many of the major components responsible for creating and transferring power, including eligible components within the:
- Engine
- Transmission and transfer case
- Front-wheel-drive system
- Rear-wheel-drive system
- Driveshaft and constant-velocity joint systems
- Powertrain control modules
- Turbocharger, when equipped
- Certain seals and gaskets
Coverage applies to defects in materials or workmanship under normal use and remains subject to the complete warranty terms.
Non-Powertrain Coverage
HondaTrue Certified non-powertrain coverage includes many components outside the engine and transmission, such as eligible components within the:
- Fuel system
- Suspension
- Steering system
- Braking system
- Electrical system and sensors
- Heating and air-conditioning system
- Factory-installed audio and navigation equipment
- Safety-restraint system
- Power windows, seats, mirrors and sunroof systems
Fluids and lubricants may also be covered when they are required as part of an otherwise covered repair.
What Is Not Covered by the CPO Warranty?
HondaTrue Certified coverage is broad, but it is not an unlimited bumper-to-bumper warranty. Normal maintenance, wear items and cosmetic concerns are generally not covered.
Common exclusions include:
- Brake pads and rotors
- Tires and tire valve stems
- Wiper blades
- Filters
- Spark plugs
- Most bulbs and fuses
- Routine fluid replacement
- Wheel balancing and alignment
- Paint and cosmetic appearance
- Upholstery and interior trim
- Window and mirror glass
- Wheels and wheel covers
- Damage caused by collisions, weather or external conditions
The warranty may also exclude repairs connected to improper maintenance, abuse, unauthorized modifications, racing, overloading or continued operation after a mechanical failure.
Keeping complete maintenance records is important. Honda may request records showing when required service was performed, particularly when a covered component depends on regular maintenance.
How Does a Private-Party Warranty Transfer Work?
When a Honda Certified Pre-Owned vehicle is sold from one private owner to another, the new owner can receive the remaining balance of the applicable limited powertrain and non-powertrain coverage.
The transfer does not restart the time or mileage limits.
For example, assume a HondaTrue Certified vehicle has 18 months of non-powertrain coverage remaining when it is sold privately. The next owner may receive that remaining 18 months, subject to the 100,000-mile limit. The next owner does not receive a new two-year period.
Honda directs owners to:
- Contact Honda Care Contract Services at 1-800-999-5901.
- Notify the American Honda Warranty Department of the ownership change.
- Submit the applicable Change of Ownership Information Card included with the warranty materials.
The warranty booklet specifically describes private-party-to-private-party transfers. Customers trading a vehicle to a dealership or purchasing through a different type of transaction should ask how the transfer provisions apply to their situation.
Additional HondaTrue Certified Benefits
Warranty coverage is only one part of the HondaTrue Certified program.
Roadside Assistance
HondaTrue Certified vehicles are eligible for Honda Care roadside assistance for two years or until the vehicle reaches 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, beginning after the original New Vehicle Limited Warranty expires.
Roadside services can include:
- Emergency towing
- Flat-tire assistance when a spare is available
- Battery jump-starts
- Emergency fuel delivery
- Lockout assistance
- Winch service
Program limits and restrictions apply.
Trip-Interruption Benefits
When a covered mechanical breakdown disables the vehicle overnight more than 100 miles from home, the program may reimburse qualifying transportation, food and lodging expenses.
Honda's current warranty booklet provides up to $100 per day for three days, for a maximum benefit of $300, subject to program requirements and receipt documentation.
Complimentary Oil Changes
HondaTrue Certified vehicles include two complimentary oil changes within one year or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. The eligibility period begins at delivery or after Honda Service Pass expires, when applicable.
The service must be scheduled and completed through a participating Honda dealership, and exclusions may apply.
Additional Program Benefits
HondaTrue Certified vehicles may also include:
- A downloadable 182-point inspection report
- CARFAX vehicle history information
- A $0 deductible for covered warranty repairs
- Concierge assistance
- A three-day exchange policy, subject to applicable terms
Ask the dealership to explain which benefits apply to the specific vehicle and whether any eligibility periods have already begun.
CPO Honda vs. New Honda: How Should You Compare the Price?
A Certified Pre-Owned Honda usually has a lower selling price than a comparable new Honda, but the selling price is only one part of the total cost.
New vehicles and CPO vehicles may qualify for different financing rates. A lower rate on the more expensive vehicle can sometimes narrow the monthly payment difference more than buyers expect.
Consider this hypothetical comparison:
- Illustrative vehicle price: Certified Pre-Owned Honda - $25,000 | New Honda - $28,000
- Illustrative APR: Certified Pre-Owned Honda - 6.5% | New Honda - 2.9%
- Loan term: Certified Pre-Owned Honda - 60 months | New Honda - 60 months
- Estimated monthly payment: Certified Pre-Owned Honda - $489 | New Honda - $502
- Estimated total interest: Certified Pre-Owned Honda - $4,349 | New Honda - $2,113
- Estimated total of payments: Certified Pre-Owned Honda - $29,349 | New Honda - $30,113
This example is for educational purposes only and does not represent a current Serra Honda Grandville or Honda Financial Services offer. It excludes taxes, registration, documentation charges, optional products, down payment and trade equity.
In this example, the new vehicle costs $3,000 more, but the estimated payment is only about $13 more per month because of the lower illustrative interest rate. The CPO vehicle still costs less over the full loan, but the difference in total payments is approximately $764 rather than the original $3,000 price difference.
That does not mean the new vehicle is always the better value or that CPO is always less expensive. It shows why buyers should compare the entire transaction instead of assuming the lower sticker price automatically produces the lowest payment.
Compare These Numbers Side by Side
When evaluating a CPO Honda and a new Honda, ask to see:
- Vehicle selling price
- Amount financed
- Annual percentage rate
- Loan length
- Down payment
- Trade-in value and remaining trade balance
- Estimated monthly payment
- Total interest paid
- Total of all scheduled payments
- Remaining factory and CPO warranty coverage
Use the same down payment and loan length in both scenarios whenever possible. Comparing a 60-month CPO loan with a 72-month new-vehicle loan may make one payment look more attractive without showing the true difference in total cost.
Questions to Ask Before Buying a Certified Pre-Owned Honda
Before choosing a specific vehicle, ask the dealership:
What is the original in-service date?
This determines how much time remains on the limited powertrain warranty and any applicable original factory coverage.
At what mileage does each warranty end?
Both the powertrain and non-powertrain CPO coverages are subject to a 100,000-total-mile limit.
Is the original New Vehicle Limited Warranty still active?
The answer determines when the CPO non-powertrain coverage begins.
Can I see the full inspection report?
Honda provides a downloadable vehicle inspection report for HondaTrue vehicles. Review the actual report for the vehicle you are considering.
Which HondaTrue tier applies to this vehicle?
HondaTrue Certified, HondaTrue Used and HondaTrue Certified EV have different warranty terms and benefits.
What maintenance or repairs were completed during certification?
The inspection report and vehicle records can help you understand the vehicle's condition at the time of sale.
Can you show me the CPO and new-vehicle financing options side by side?
Ask for the complete amount financed, estimated payment, total interest and total of payments using comparable terms.
What would transfer if I sold the vehicle privately?
Confirm the remaining limited warranty periods and the steps required to document the ownership change.
