Honda Ridgeline Owner's Guide: Maintenance, Towing, and Getting the Most from Your Truck in West Michigan
Owning a Honda Ridgeline is one thing. Getting the absolute most out of it - keeping it reliable for 200,000 miles, towing safely, thriving in Michigan winters, and using every feature to its fullest - is another.
This guide is for Ridgeline owners and soon-to-be owners across West Michigan. Whether you drove yours off our lot last week or you've had yours for three years, you'll find something useful here.
Your Ridgeline Maintenance Schedule: What Michigan Drivers Need to Know
Staying on Honda's maintenance schedule is the single most important thing you can do to protect your Ridgeline's reliability and long-term value.
The Honda Maintenance Minder™ System
Your Ridgeline doesn't use a static calendar-based schedule. The onboard Maintenance Minder™ monitors actual driving conditions - trip length, engine temperature, operating load, and driving style - to tell you precisely when service is needed.
Watch for these codes on your instrument panel:
- "A" Code: Engine oil and filter change
- "B" Code: Oil change + brake inspection + tire rotation + cabin air filter check
- Sub-codes 1-9: Specific additional services (spark plugs, transmission fluid, differential fluid, timing belt, etc.)
When the Maintenance Minder activates, schedule service within 500 miles.
Michigan-Specific Maintenance Notes
- Oil & Filter Change
Interval: Every 5,000-7,500 mi (Minder guided)
Michigan Consideration: Michigan winters = "severe" conditions; err toward shorter intervals - Tire Rotation
Interval: Every 5,000-7,500 mi
Michigan Consideration: Critical for even AWD wear; especially important at summer/winter tire transitions - Brake Inspection
Interval: Every 15,000 mi
Michigan Consideration: Road salt accelerates caliper corrosion - inspect annually - Cabin Air Filter
Interval: Every 15,000-25,000 mi
Michigan Consideration: More frequent near construction areas or dusty rural roads - Engine Air Filter
Interval: Every 30,000 mi
Michigan Consideration: - Differential Fluid
Interval: Every 30,000 mi
Michigan Consideration: Essential for i-VTM4® AWD performance in winter - Transmission Fluid
Interval: Every 30,000-45,000 mi
Michigan Consideration: Confirm with your model year owner's manual - Coolant
Interval: Every 60,000 mi, then every 30,000 mi
Michigan Consideration: - Spark Plugs
Interval: Every 90,000 mi
Michigan Consideration: Iridium plugs - long-life standard equipment
Important: Honda defines "severe driving conditions" to include frequent cold starts, short-trip driving, and extreme temperatures - all common in a West Michigan winter. If a significant portion of your driving happens between November and March, follow the shorter end of each service interval range.

Towing with Your Ridgeline: The Complete Guide
The 2026 Ridgeline tows up to 5,000 lbs with the standard factory-installed Class III hitch and 7-pin connector - no tow package purchase required.
Before Every Tow
- Calculate your loaded trailer weight conservatively. Dry trailer weight plus all contents must stay at or below 5,000 lbs. Don't estimate - weigh your trailer if you're regularly near the limit.
- Check tongue weight. Max tongue weight is 600 lbs. At 10-15% of total trailer weight, a 4,500-lb trailer should have a tongue weight between 450-600 lbs - within spec.
- Use premium fuel for sustained heavy towing. Honda recommends premium unleaded for loads above 3,500 lbs to protect the V6 under extended load.
- Confirm all connections: hitch ball fully seated, locking pin secure, safety chains crossed and attached, all trailer lights functional.
On the Road
- Add stopping distance. Extra weight extends braking distance - especially on wet or icy Michigan roads.
- Reduce speed through curves and ramps. Take exit ramp spirals 5-10 mph below your normal speed.
- Activate Tow/Haul mode (available on select trims) - adjusts shift points to hold lower gears longer and reduces heat buildup on downhill grades.

Getting the Most from the In-Bed Trunk®
The Ridgeline's lockable 7.3-cubic-foot in-bed trunk is one of its most practical features - and most owners discover new uses for it regularly.
Tool security on job sites. Power tools, meters, and equipment lock away automatically when you lock the truck. Your tools are hidden from view and secured against theft.
Portable cooler. The trunk is waterproof with a drain plug. Fill it with ice for a beach day at Holland State Park or a tailgate at a Whitecaps game. No separate cooler required.
Wet gear separation. Keep wet waders, muddy boots, and rain gear isolated from your cab interior. Essential for hunters, anglers, and hikers in variable Michigan weather.
Grocery bag hooks. Three hooks along the upper rear edge of the trunk keep bags upright on the drive home - a small feature that earns appreciation every week.
Valuables at trailheads. Cameras, wallets, and electronics lock out of sight at remote trailhead parking areas.
Winter Driving in Michigan: Ridgeline-Specific Tips
Use Your Traction Management Modes Proactively
Don't wait until you're sliding to engage Snow mode - activate it before you encounter snow-covered roads. The system softens throttle response and adjusts AWD torque distribution for low-traction surfaces.
Mode selector guide for Michigan:
- Snow: Anytime you see snowflakes - even light snow on highway on-ramps
- Mud: Spring mud season, soft campground access roads, agricultural areas
- Sand: Silver Lake Dunes, Lake Michigan beach access, loose terrain
- Normal: All dry or lightly wet pavement conditions
Winter Tire Considerations
The Ridgeline comes from the factory with all-season tires (all trims except TrailSport, which includes all-terrain tires). In Michigan's serious winter conditions, dedicated winter tires can improve stopping distances dramatically - often more significantly than AWD alone.
Serra Honda Grandville's service department can evaluate your current tires and recommend winter tire options appropriate for your driving patterns and budget.
Pre-Winter Checklist
Run through this before November each year:
- [ ] Battery load test - cold temperatures reduce capacity significantly
- [ ] Coolant mixture check - should handle below -34°F
- [ ] Wiper blade inspection - consider winter wiper blades
- [ ] Tire tread depth - replace if below 4/32"
- [ ] Brake inspection - Michigan road salt accelerates corrosion
- [ ] Windshield washer fluid - switch to winter formula rated below 0°F
- [ ] Check all exterior lights - shorter days make functional lighting critical
